Hydrocephalus Awareness Month

September is National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month, a time to be iNFormed about this condition that affects people of all ages. For those living with neurofibromatosis (NF), hydrocephalus can sometimes be an added challenge. Tumors along the optic pathway, brain, or spine may block the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid, leading to pressure buildup that requires monitoring and, in many cases, treatment such as shunts or surgery.

Symptoms of hydrocephalus can vary but often include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Vision changes
  • Balance or walking difficulties
  • Developmental delays or irritability in children
  • Problems with memory or concentration in adults

Recognizing these symptoms early is important, especially for people with NF who may be at higher risk.

Raising awareness helps ensure earlier detection, better care, and more research for both hydrocephalus and NF. This month, we stand with the hydrocephalus community while also recognizing the unique ways these conditions can overlap. Together, we push for greater understanding and support, because no one should face these challenges alone.
