If you or someone you love is living with NF, you know the costs can add up: therapies, assistive devices, specialists, and more. An ABLE account is a savings tool built to help with exactly that.
The Basics
ABLE stands for Achieving a Better Life Experience. It’s a tax-advantaged savings account for people with disabilities. Money saved in this account doesn’t count against the strict asset limits tied to benefits like SSI or Medicaid, so families can save without risking the support they already rely on.
Why It’s Worth Knowing About
- Save up to $100,000 without losing SSI eligibility
- Funds can go toward things like therapies, housing, transportation, assistive technology, education, and everyday living expenses
- No income limits, and family, friends, or anyone else can contribute too
- The account belongs to the person with the disability, giving them more independence and control over their own savings
Who’s Eligible
Generally, you qualify if your disability started before age 46. You don’t have to already be receiving SSI or SSDI to open an account, though it can make the process easier.
