Resources for Common Needs

Many have heard the expression “It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.” That rings true when it comes to figuring out who to contact if you need certain resources. Many states and counties vary greatly on what resources/programs are available. Each program can also have different eligibility and income requirements, so it is always best to check the guidelines for your location.

A great place to start is your state’s Health Department. Health Departments are normally very knowledgeable about local resources, however if you would like to look up resources from the privacy of your own home benefits.gov is a great place to start. Benefits.gov has resources for housing, utilities, financial assistance, food insecurity and much more. You can even tailor the search based on your age, household size and income.

Another great resource is the website for LIHEAP (Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program) Clearing Source. This website allows you to look for a local agency to apply for assistance with your gas and/or electricity bill. They also have information about weatherization support.

SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) is a resource that is available to help people with Medicare education and assist with trouble shooting Medicare issues. It’s a great place to start if you need information about how to start the process of applying for Medicare.

The last resource that I will highlight in this writing is the USDA Food and Nutrition Service website. This website lists contact information for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Most states have SNAP applications online and can be completed via phone.

These are a few mentions of places that offer information and assistance with resource to meet basic needs, however there are many more available. NF Midwest is here to help you find additional resources or even help complete applications if need.
