Show Your Stripes: Awareness for Rare Disease Day

Between 25-30 million Americans are living with a rare disease according to the National Organization for Rare Disease (NORD). A disease is considered to be rare when it affects less than 1 in 2,000 people. As of today, there are over 7000 rare diseases. People living with a rare disease often face isolation, lack of support and challenges with finding and receiving effective healthcare and treatments. NORD along with several other patient organizations have partnered to highlight the need for awareness for less known diseases by proclaiming February 28th as Rare Disease Day.

You are encouraged to wear stripes on Rare Disease Day to advocate and show support for the need of more research, education and support for those who face the challenges of living with a rare disease. Other ways to participate and make a difference are to donate or attend an event for a rare disease such as a walk or benefit dinner. You can also help by sharing information about rare diseases or the nonprofits who support them on your social media. These are just some simple but powerful ways to make an impact.
