be iNFormed – Applying for Disability Benefits with Neurofibromatosis

We have a new be iNFormed article that was written for us by Ram Meyyappan from Social Security Disability Help. This article is meant to provide a glimpse into how someone might be eligible for disability benefits if they have neurofibromatosis type 1, type 2 or schwannomatosis. Read and share this short article.

  • I have NEUROFIBROMATOSIS and I have two daughters that are 24years old & 25years old. My NEUROFIBROMATOSIS is worse than my daughters. I have many numerous fibroma tumors throughout my body and in my eyes. And was told surgery can not be done to remove any of them cause they are too big. The only thing I can do to get any relief is CHEMOTHERAPY to shrink the tumors in my eyes & behind my eyes. And radiation to shrink the fibrous tumors thats throughout my body. Do I qualify for disability? Can me & my daughters be approved for disability or SSI for having NEUROFIBROMATOSIS?

    • A person doesn’t qualify for disability just by having neurofibromatosis. It depends on how you are affected. Basically, if you aren’t able to work enough to support yourself (what is called substantial gainful activity) and it’s can be proven that it’s because of your medical issues then you may get disability. We recently had a webinar on this that you can watch at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EggzlwCTacY&t=10s
